What is it:
MEIS/SEIS is a scheme designed to provide rewards to exporters to offset infrastructural inefficiencies and associated costs. The scheme will concentrate on rights/products with elevated employment capability and elevated export amount, which eventually, will improve India’s passiveness in exports. Under this scheme, an incentive is given by the govt. to the exporter for bringing in foreign exchange for the economy.
The exporter is issued a scrip, the value of which is a pre-determined percentage of the FOB value of goods exported. Generally, this percentage is 2%, 3%, or 5% of the FOB value depending on the product exported.
The duty credit scrips issued under MEIS are easily transferable and will be used to pay excise duty, service tax, and customs duty. The incentives that are given under MEIS are also accessible to units based in Special Economic Zones (SEZs).
